There are three primary classes of weapons, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Depending on the target and mission, a Pirate can select the appropriate weapons cache to maximize the outcome of their mission. Additional information about how to apply these internals sytems to your ship can be found in The Upgrades Screen.
Energy
Energy based weapons are capable of doing massive damage if shields are not present. All energy weapons build up a charge through the use of capacitors.

Light Lasers are typically used on frigate through cruiser class hulls; however, they can also be encountered on civilian vessels as the game evolves. Light lasers are fully affected by the existence of shields and minimally affected by armor on the target ship. |

Medium Lasers are typically seen on destroyer class through battleship class hulls. Medium lasers are fully affected by the existence of shields and minimally affected by armor on the target ship. |

Heavy Lasers are encountered on cruiser and battleship class hulls; although smaller class ships can and do employ them at times as an offensive weapon. As with the smaller laser weapons, they are fully affected by the existence of shields and minimally affected by armor on the target ship. |

A Particle Beam is a large mass weapon, typically mounted on large hulls. It has a long range with high damage output and huge power requirements. The kinetic energy damage does not dissipate like a normal energy weapon; instead it diffuses due to lost beam integrity over distance. Minimally affected by the existence of shields on the target ship. |

The Q-Gun was developed by the pirates at their base and is ideal for raider missions if you can afford the weapon. The Q-Gun combines shield disruption with standard laser technology. Currently, Q-Guns are available only on Pirate ships. The shield technology was adapted to create a projected tube that interferes with the target's shield at a localized spot. Once penetrated a laser fires through the hole in the shield striking the now unprotected ship hull. Special pin point sensors mounted on the turret utilize the shield disruption and beam allowing it to target specific ship systems. Internal systems are targeted on FTL Drives first followed by Tractor Shears, Security and finally any Weapons Consoles. Any unresolved damage is then randomly assigned to the remaining systems on the ship other than cargo pods. The primary purpose of the weapon is to ensure that a raider can eventually tractor and board a merchant ship. An additional benefit is that cargo pods will be undamaged, whereas normal weapons may damage some of the cargo and reduce the value of completing a raider mission.
